Middle School Essay Contest
In the early years of Chief Joseph Post 135, the post was looking for a Legion program to work. The number of members were few and the funds in the treasury was even fewer. All of the high schools in the area were covered by other posts nearby, and an oratorical contest or sponsoring an American Legion Boys’ State candidate were out of the question. Almost in jest, the District Commander suggested that we look at the possibilities of an Essay Contest in the local Lolo Middle School. Liaison with the government teacher resulted in the post running an Eighth Grade Citizens Award. The contest would be based on an essay that was on any aspect of the U.S. Constitution, as assigned by the teacher.
The contest was such a success that last year was the sixth year for Lolo Middle School. This past year the post added Valley Christian Middle School to the contest, while two other Legion posts in District Five have added it to their programs. Further, at the last Convention of the Department of Montana, the convention delegates voted positively to make this program a state-wide competition.
