American Legion Boys’ State
American Legion Boys’ State by Ron Hansell, Post Chairman The 2007 session of American Legion Boys’ State met at Carrol College in Helena from Sunday, June 10 to Friday, June 15, with Mike Russell of Helena as Program Director and John Louk of Billings as Chairman. I was a member of the committee and staff. Counselors and staff met for a barbeque on Saturday June 9. Approximately 230 delegates attended, electing city, county, and state officials, and attending sessions on Legislative, Executive and Judicial branches throughout the week. They also visited the State Capitol and Supreme Court, and held sessions in the House, Senate and Court chambers. Staff met every morning at breakfast to chart out the day, and address any issues arising during the sessions. Thursday evening featured awards and recognition, and a talent show. The level of talent and creativity of these young men is truly astonishing. Overall the session appeared to be a total success. There was a problem with a few delegates leaving early, and about six no-shows, including one of Chief Joseph Post 135’s sponsored delegates. Let’s get an early start on next year’s program.
